Job Overview
This role is a key member of the engineering leadership team responsible for driving delivery excellence, operational maturity, and continuous improvement of backend platforms and services.
The Engineering Manager leads teams responsible for the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems built using modern Java-based microservices architectures.
This role partners closely with Architecture, Program Management, Quality Engineering, Security, and Operations to translate technical roadmaps into reliable, high-quality engineering execution. It requires strong people leadership, backend technical depth, execution discipline, and operational governance, with a focus on building resilient distributed systems and high-performing teams.
Major Accountabilities
Lead and manage backend engineering teams building Java 17 / Spring Boot-based microservices and APIs
Translate architectural and platform roadmaps into executable engineering plans
Drive end-to-end backend delivery across the SDLC, including design, development, testing, deployment, and production support
Ensure adherence to engineering standards, including secure coding, API design, coding standards, and enterprise frameworks
Oversee design and development of RESTful APIs, event-driven services (Kafka), and distributed system components
Manage sprint execution, release planning, and service operational health (latency, throughput, error rates, availability)
Drive engineering excellence through CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code quality tooling, and DevOps practices
Provide technical oversight for microservices architecture, service scalability, fault tolerance, and resiliency patterns
Ensure systems are designed for observability (logging, metrics, tracing) using tools like Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK
Monitor and improve engineering productivity, code quality, and system performance using measurable KPIs
Lead modernization initiatives including containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), and cloud-native adoption
Foster a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement
Coach and develop engineers in backend design, coding standards, and system thinking
Ensure proactive communication of delivery status, risks, dependencies, and mitigation plans
Collaborate across globally distributed engineering teams
Drive production stability through incident management, root cause analysis, and reliability engineering practices
Skills / Abilities
Proven experience leading backend engineering teams delivering high-scale, distributed systems
Strong expertise in Java 17, Spring Boot, and enterprise Java ecosystem
Deep understanding of microservices architecture, REST APIs, and event-driven systems (Kafka or equivalent)
Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), containerization (Docker), and Kubernetes
Solid understanding of data persistence (RDBMS like PostgreSQL/Oracle and NoSQL stores)
Experience with caching strategies (Redis), messaging systems, and asynchronous processing
Strong knowledge of CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, etc.), build tools (Maven/Gradle), and version control (Git)
Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and logging frameworks
Understanding of security practices (OAuth2, JWT, TLS, secure APIs)
Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in fast-paced environments
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts
Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building capabilities
Experience in release management, dependency management, and engineering governance
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
