Equitable Bank is looking for a Bilingual Residential Mortgage Underwriter in Montreal. This role involves analyzing and approving mortgage applications, negotiating terms with brokers, and ensuring compliance with policies. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, excellent analytical and communication skills, and proficiency in French and English.

La personne titulaire du poste est responsable de recommander, refuser ou, selon son niveau d’autorité, approuver des demandes de prêt garanties par des biens immobiliers résidentiels. Elle doit prendre des décisions de crédit rigoureuses et éclairées tout en offrant un excellent niveau de service, en respectant les politiques de la Banque et en contribuant à l’atteinte des objectifs de croissance et de rentabilité.
The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for negotiating, recommending, declining, and, in some instances, approving mortgage applications within established guidelines, to be secured by new or existing real estate. This must be done as efficiently as possible while exercising sound lending judgment and without compromising service and profitability.
Principales responsabilités:On a daily basis, review received mortgage applications along with supporting documentation and negotiate terms with the mortgage broker, decline the applications, recommend the applications for approval and in some instances, approve the applications. Ensure that approved deals close as scheduled and as efficiently as possible by following up on outstanding conditions/documents and ensuring compliance with established guidelines. (50%)
Follow up with brokers on a daily basis on issued mortgage commitments to ensure the efficient closing of mortgage files. (20%)
On a daily basis provide the highest level of internal and external customer service while fielding mortgage broker inquiries and maintaining broker relationships. (20%)
On a daily basis, provide underwriting expertise to mortgage brokers, clients and co-workers and maintain an up to date knowledge of company policies, procedures and products. (10%)
Bilingual (French and English)

2+ years’ mortgage experience in the alternative mortgage market
Proficiency in MS Office (mainly MS Word and Excel)
Completion of a post-secondary degree preferably in a financial field
Knowledge of fraud risk in the mortgage industry and the ability to address concerns relating to suspected misrepresentation is required

Responsabilités et imputabilité
Le titulaire du poste évolue sous la supervision du gestionnaire ou du gestionnaire principal de la souscription hypothécaire résidentielle, tout en bénéficiant d’un certain degré d’autonomie dans la gestion quotidienne de son portefeuille de dossiers.
Son expertise et son efficacité contribuent directement à l’atteinte des objectifs stratégiques du secteur résidentiel et à la satisfaction des partenaires courtiers.
Selon son niveau d’autorité, la personne peut également détenir des pouvoirs d’approbation pour certains dossiers hypothécaires.
The incumbent is responsible for making sound lending recommendations, often under constrained timelines, without compromising credit risk and profitability. The incumbent should be prepared to manage files of greater complexity at times. The incumbent is required to follow corporate policies and procedures in order to work through files and rationalize the recommendations or decisions made.
There are designated authorities and various levels of management reviewing recommendations and approving the mortgage applications submitted for approval.
Incumbents operate under direct management and their performance is regularly monitored by the Manager or Senior Manager, Residential Mortgage Underwriting and the Director, Residential Mortgage Underwriting. Regular decision making pertaining to deal recommendations and pricing is required however, management supervision and guidance is available as required. Given time constraint challenges of the department, the incumbent will work with a fair degree of independence and must think and react accordingly.
Being an integral part of the mortgage underwriting process while providing excellent customer service to Equitable Bank’s mortgage broker partners, the role will have a substantial impact on the success of the Single Family Residential department in reaching its strategic goals and other departmental objectives.
The incumbents may have authority to approve mortgage applications up to a specified approval limit but this will be at the discretion of SFR Management.

Incumbents communicate daily with mortgage brokers and clients, and when necessary with appraisers and solicitors. Daily communication with interdepartmental staff members also occurs.

Normal office environment; however increased pressure at times, due to file complexity, dealing with suspected misrepresentation, high intensity fast-paced flow of business, maintaining mortgage broker service levels, meeting tight deadlines, uncooperative business partners, etc. Hybrid work is expected with 1-5 days in person depending on the level and seniority of the role.
