The Project Controls Senior Estimator leads the development of accurate, defensible cost estimates for complex capital projects and supports key investment decisions, project approvals, and execution planning across Suncor’s portfolio. Reporting to the Estimating Manager, this role is critical to delivering high-quality cost insight throughout the project lifecycle.
Working closely with Engineering, Construction, Project Management, and Project Controls, you will review contractor estimates across all D&MP stages, analyze historical project costs, develop benchmarks, and apply lessons learned to future estimates. The ideal candidate brings strong technical estimating expertise and can clearly communicate key cost drivers, risks, and opportunities based on project scope, execution strategy, and schedule maturity.

Minimum Requirements:
- Technical diploma or university degree, with 15+ years of related estimating experience.
- Experience in field construction activities for large industrial projects.
- Proven ability to develop early-stage, high-level estimates using limited information, including factored estimates and internal benchmarks.
- Knowledge of AACEI estimating standards and their practical application.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment while also working independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple project estimates and competing priorities simultaneously.
- Experience with Aspen-Tech Capital Cost Estimator would be considered an asset.
- Oil and Gas/Oil Sands industry experience is considered an asset

Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and validate Class 5 to Class 1 capital cost estimates in accordance with Suncor and industry standards.
- Apply appropriate estimating methodologies based on project phase, including factored, parametric, detailed, and probabilistic approaches.
- Build complete project estimates covering all cost components, including direct and indirect field costs, engineering, owner’s costs, escalation, and contingency.
- Prepare and present key estimate deliverables such as the Estimate Preparation Plan (EPP), Basis of Estimate (BoE), and estimate presentations for decision gates, peer reviews, and leadership.
- Lead estimate reviews, benchmarking, validation, and contingency risk analysis, using data and insights to inform and influence stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Project Management, Supply Chain, and service providers to align scope, execution strategy, and schedule, while identifying and closing scope definition gaps.
- Support development of best-in-class project estimates by identifying key drivers of predictability and competitiveness, and optimizing project scope, execution, and schedule.
- Manage end-to-end estimating and benchmarking processes with minimal supervision, while ensuring compliance with internal governance, estimating guidelines, and external regulatory or partner requirements.
Location and other Key details:
- The position will be based at the Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Center at 150 – 6th Ave S.W
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday with business travel to sites
