Description
Coho Construction Management is seeking an experienced Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to identify, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that may pose health risks to employees and subcontractors based in Chantilly, VA. The CIH will conduct exposure assessments, ensure compliance with occupational health regulations, and design programs to protect worker health and safety across our active construction sites and project locations.
This position is considered remote. Frequent travel to project sites nationwide required (may include multi-day or extended trips)
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Conduct workplace exposure assessments for chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards (air sampling, noise monitoring, radiation surveys, etc.)
- Interpret monitoring data against OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs), ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), and other applicable standards
- Develop and recommend engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) programs to reduce employee exposure
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local occupational health regulations (OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, and similar agencies)
- Write technical reports, exposure assessments, and compliance documentation
- Develop and deliver employee training on hazard communication, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and related topics
- Manage or support industrial hygiene sampling equipment calibration and maintenance
- Investigate employee health complaints and potential exposure incidents
- Support audits, inspections, and regulatory agency interactions
- Collaborate with EHS, project management, and site superintendents to integrate industrial hygiene practices into daily construction operations
- Maintain accurate records of exposure monitoring, training, and corrective actions
Essential Job Qualifications and Requirements:
- Education and Certifications:
- Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene or related field (preferred)
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field
- Active Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential through the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)
- Required Experience and Skills:
- Minimum of 3 years of professional industrial hygiene experience
- Experience in commercial or industrial construction environments (exposure to silica, asbestos, lead, noise, or other jobsite hazards) (preferred)
- Additional certifications (CSP, CHMM, or similar) (preferred)
- Experience with industrial hygiene software/data management systems (preferred)
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, ACGIH guidelines, and industrial hygiene sampling methods
- Experience with air sampling, noise dosimetry, and other exposure monitoring equipment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects/sites
- Working Conditions
- Combination of office work and on-site visits to active construction jobsites
- Must wear appropriate PPE on construction sites (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, etc.)
- Exposure to typical construction site conditions (noise, dust, weather, uneven terrain) during assessments
