KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Underwriting Risk Management

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive underwriting guidelines and framework specially designed to support new products and new business strategies, ensuring they remain competitive.
  • Manage the technical relationship with reinsurers to ensure treaty compliance, optimising risk-sharing arrangements or facultative support.
  • Ensure that underwriting limits and payment authorization limits within the system are configured in accordance with the Delegated Underwriting Authority as approved by the Board.
  • Assist the Head of UW & Claims by preparing technical updates to the UWCC including guidelines revision, claims experience insights, and risk trend analysis.

Product Underwriting Development & Design

  • Review the definitions, exclusions and the underwriting framework for all new products, ensuring they are aligned with Group UW risk philosophy.
  • Periodically review medical requirements and financially underwriting limits to remain competitive within the Malaysia market.
  • Provide technical expertise on benefit definitions to ensure technical underwriting intent is enforceable and clear.
  • Provide historical underwriting data and technical view to support product pricing.

Underwriting System

  • Serve as the primary business owner for the UWMe, ensuring that the UW rule is aligned with the technical underwriting philosophy.
  • Continuously refine automated underwriting rules to maximize STP while maintaining risk control and quality standards.
  • Ensure UWME and OWB system enhancements or new rule deployments is accurately captured and aligned with technical underwriting intent.

Underwriting Quality Review

  • Establish and maintain robust UW Quality Review framework o systematically audit underwriter and STP decision for technical accuracy.
  • Perform monthly UW QA review to ensure consistency in the application of guidelines.
  • Identify recurring underwriting errors or technical gaps through the UW Quality Review and implement corrective action plans or technical training.

Technical Underwriting Training

  • Develop and execute and annual UW training roadmap, ensuring all underwriters achieve a min of 20 credit hours to maintain technical proficiency and professional standards.
  • Lead mandatory training sessions on new product frameworks and any guidelines updates to ensure underwriters are fully aware of changes.
  • Conduct specialised training sessions focused on financial UW and complex medical risks to improve the team’s ability to assess the high SA and complex medical cases.
  • Implement a structured assessment process to ensure underwriters are well equipped and technical sound before they are granted higher levels of delegated authority.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in Medicine, Biomedicine and/or relevant sciences AND/OR
  • More than 10 years’ experience in Life Insurance, with 2 years of senior leadership roles in Underwriting portfolio
  • Life Insurance professional qualification is advantageous, i.e. FMII, LOMA, FALU and etc.

  • Deep knowledge of life insurance underwriting principles, life insurance products for individual and group
  • Knowledge of local regulations and compliance requirements related to life insurance industry and their application in underwriting and claims
