What’s the role
As a Materials & Corrosion Research Associate, you will perform laboratory-based research focused on evaluating the corrosion, mechanical, and physical properties of materials relevant to Shell’s operations. The role involves supporting the design, construction, and execution of laboratory experiments across a wide range of chemical environments, including high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, some of which involve hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). Additionally, the position contributes to materials performance assessments and failure analysis investigations.
What you’ll be doing
- Safely conduct laboratory testing, including sample preparation, test setup, test progress monitoring, data collection, documentation, and reporting.
- Testing of materials in various chemical environments, especially electrochemical testing, immersion testing in high pressure autoclave using toxic gases
- Maintain testing equipment, perform data acquisition/recording/documentation per departmental quality and safety requirements
- Be the owner for all equipment in the relevant area, responsible for ensuring smooth functioning of equipment and all related documentation
- Execute laboratory maintenance or new /revamp projects (Management of Change) with required safety systems (ex. Lock Out and Tag Out (LOTO), engineering controls, administrative controls, portable and fixed detection, F&G systems etc.
- Perform operation of process control and run data acquisition systems.
- Timely deliver validated and reduced data/reports to project leader.
- Be responsible for modifying experimental units and maintaining all required documentation.
What you bring
- Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical or Metallurgy or Masters in Science (Chemistry/ Experimental Physics)
- A minimum of 2 years of industry/site experience including a minimum of one year of experience of materials compatibility testing, mechanical testing in a corrosion laboratory environment.
- Experience in various forms of mechanical and metallurgical testing.
- Experiences in the areas of corrosion testing including working with autoclave will be given extra weightage.
- Demonstrated skilled proficiency in evaluating equipment design and installation. Have understanding on PEFS drawings, circuit diagrams, PEFS, P&IDs, operation and maintenance manuals of OEMs etc. as per Shell and International Standards.
- Have a good grasp on mechanical and metallurgical aspects of various materials as commonly used in oil and gas industry
- Familiarity with STCB site operations, HSE management systems, permit-to-work, how to raise MOC, RAMS, Sphera Cloud etc is essential for this role.
- Willingness and ability to learn new things and adapt it to the own work environment.
- Experience with laboratory testing and handling of chemicals
- Understanding of Shell DEP/ASME/ASTM/NACE standards
- Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and job duties
- Experiences in establishing laboratory, setting up test equipment’s in a multinational company’s laboratory environment is preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to listen well, ability to adapt quickly in a cross-cultural environment, good organizational skills, self-motivated to learn, successful experience working as part of a team being comfortable with change and being able to respond rapidly to it. Results oriented and Customer focused.
- Excellent team player – collaboration with various teams in-house and across various Shell locations is expected.
- Knowledge: Mechanical and metallurgy aspects of metals, Corrosion testing, basics of electrochemistry to run experiments
